Bio
Ben lives and works on the Roseland peninsula, on the south coast of Cornwall.
He trained in sculpture at Falmouth College of Art and after spells working as a lobster fisherman and commercial diver he returned to his art work and started to paint en plein air in the landscape he had grown up in.
Ben uses a palette knife to construct bold impasto compositions with a sculptural quality, and is especially drawn to strong contrasts of opposing light and dark and the patterns created by interlocking planes.
“I try to simplify what I’m looking at in my work, to pare back to essential components in order to understand better the basic visual principles of a place. To identify it’s signature relationships of colour and tone, and therefore perhaps something elementally absolute.”
